Cashew | Kaju
Kaju or Cashew is known mostly by its nuts owing to its unique taste, free availability and multifarious uses in the kitchen, bakery and confectionery. The kidney-shaped cashew nut is encased in a hard shell with two layers. The nut shell with its side indentation pointed upward, looks like a heart. They have many nutritional benefits which include constituting nutrients like vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, zinc, magnesium, selenium , phosphorous, iron, copper, vitamin E etc. Added to curries in the form of paste to enrich their taste and also added as garnish to pulao, kheer, halwa etc. It is also used for skincare, a paste made from soaked kaju or cashew can be used as a massage cream. Proanthocyanidins are flavonols present in cashews that prevent tumor cells from further division. Apart from the benefits mentioned above cashews are great for lowering blood pressure, a healthy heart, bones, nerves etc. and also helps in weight loss. They have been proved beneficial in removing gallstones also. If consumed daily can reduce the chances of gallstones by 27%.
